Trypsin-like protease inhibitor. Reversibly inhibits airway epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) function (IC50 = 50 nM). Inhibits the production of TNF-alpha and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) by monocytes and disrupts proliferation of pancreatic stellate cells in a rat model of pancreatic fibrosis.

Pharmacology: A serine protease inhibitor inhibiting plasmin, kallikrein, thrombin as well as trypsin, which attenuates pancreatic fibrosis (1). Reduces weight gain and improves metabolism in obese rodent models (2). In clinical use (in Japan) for pancreatitis (3). Inhibits influenza virus replication in human tracheal epithelial cells (4).
