Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), also referred to as mesenchymal stem cells or Medicinal signaling cells, are a heterogeneous population of cells derived from tissues such as bone marrow, adipose, and umbilical cord. MSCs are believed to have immunomodulatory and tissue regeneration capabilities that can be applied to the treatment of various diseases including GvHd (graft-versus-host disease)[1].

In 2006, the International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) proposed a cell surface marker panel for the minimal identification of human MSCs[2]. Under this recommendation MSCs should be positive for CD73, CD90, and CD105, but be negative for CD34, CD45, CD11b or CD14, CD19 or CD79α, and HLA-DR. This kit is established based on this standard and the MSCs are analyzed and identified by multicolor flow cytometry.
