Description

IL-11 (Interleukin-11) stimulates the proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells and megakaryocyte progenitor cells. The megakaryocyte maturation results in increased platelet production. This property of IL-11 is used for the prevention of severe thrombocytopenia after myelosuppressive chemotherapy, and therefore reduces the need for platelet transfusion after such treatment.
