Description

Interleukin 4 (IL-4) is a cytokine involved in B-cell activation processes. IL-4 induces the expression of class II MHC molecules on resting B-cells. IL-4 also enhances both secretion and cell surface expression of IgE and IgG1, and regulates the expression of the low-affinity Fc receptor for IgE (CD23) on both lymphocytes and monocytes. Genetic variations in the IL-4 gene have been implicated in the cause of ischemic stroke.
