Description

Lysyl oxidase homolog 1 (LOXL1) is an enzyme which is active on elastin and collagen. LOXL1 is expressed in ocular tissue including the iris, ciliary body, lens, and optic nerve. LOXL1 is not expressed in the retina. Genetic variations in LOXL1 are a cause of susceptibility to exfoliation syndrome (XFS), also called exfoliation glaucoma (XFG). XFS is a disorder characterized by the accumulation of abnormal fibrillar deposits in the anerior segment of the eye.
