Mitofusin-1 (MFN1) is an essential transmembrane GTPase that mediates mitochondrial fusion, which constitutes an important step in mitochondria morphology drived by a fusion and fission balance. MFN1 acts independently of the cytoskeleton by forming homo- and heteromultimers with MFN2. MFN1 is ubiquitously expressed.
