PTCH1 is a receptor for sonic hedgehog, indian hedgehog and desert hedgehog that associates with the smoothened protein to transduce the hedgehog’s protein signal. Defects in PTCH1 are the cause of several structural anomalies of the brain such as the basal cell nevus syndrome and holoprosencephaly type 7.
