Description

Urate anion exchanger 1 (URAT1 or SLC22A12) is a transporter from the organic anion transporter family (SLC22A), which is required for efficient urate re-absortion in the kidney. URAT1 regulates blood urate levels and mediates saturable urate uptake by facilitating the exchange of urate against organic anions or chloride ions. URAT1 is mainly detected in kidney cortex and proximal tubules.
